A remote mountainous highland valley within the Hida Mountains range, Kamikochi is in the western region of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. I have never been there, nor seen images of Kamikochi before I painted this picture. I chose the colour for the mood that day and metallic purples and black were used to create the picture in my head. After I had finished and framed this art piece, I did a reverse search to find out what mountain ranges there were in Japan that this could represent. Had I seen it somewhere in passing, in a book, and had I remembered the shapes? Who knows how artists get inspired. It could be a glimpse of a scene or an in-depth study. I am still not sure where this came from but I am very happy with the finished results.
